Surveying
What’s on offer for postgraduates?
Engineering science postgraduate student profile
Surveying is definitely a field for specialists. Almost all postgraduate programs are designed for those who have graduated and/or who work in the area.
It probably goes without saying that if you are contemplating a research degree in surveying (and a surprising number do) you are likely to be better off choosing a department or school which has a strong history of teaching and research in your area of specialisation.
For example, some postgraduate programs might be better on the traditional surveying methods (quantity surveying, cadastral surveying, to name two examples) while others will have a focus on geographic information systems and the like. But you also need to check out other details; in particular, make sure good supervision and facilities are available.
The experience and rewards
Visit the University Ratings section for surveying course ratings or to see how surveying rates in the Fields of Study Compared table.
Overall, postgraduate satisfaction ratings in the field were very good in the latest national Course Experience Questionnaire survey. Employment prospects were good in comparison to those of graduates in other fields and starting salaries were average.
