What’s on offer for postgraduates?

Engineering science postgraduate student profile

Surveying is definitely a field for specialists. Almost all postgraduate programs are designed for those who have graduated and/or who work in the area.

It probably goes without saying that if you are contemplating a research degree in surveying (and a surprising number do) you are likely to be better off choosing a department or school which has a strong history of teaching and research in your area of specialisation.

For example, some postgraduate programs might be better on the traditional surveying methods (quantity surveying, cadastral surveying, to name two examples) while others will have a focus on geographic information systems and the like. But you also need to check out other details; in particular, make sure good supervision and facilities are available.

The experience and rewards

Visit the University Ratings section for surveying course ratings or to see how surveying rates in the Fields of Study Compared table.

Overall, postgraduate satisfaction ratings in the field were very good in the latest national Course Experience Questionnaire survey. Employment prospects were good in comparison to those of graduates in other fields and starting salaries were average.

Veronica Black — Master of Engineering Science

Why did you decide to pursue postgraduate studies?
Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I felt that my knowledge base was broad and lacked a specialisation. I had an understanding on what I was interested in and the career path I wanted to take but was unsure on how to get there. A postgraduate degree seemed a logical stepping stone — gaining a specialisation and taking time to figure out exactly how to get there.

How did you balance your study with other commitments?
The engineering science degree is tailored to fit people with extracurricular activities and those people in industry so balancing working and studying was not an issue.

Are postgraduate qualifications a requirement in your chosen field?
It is not a requirement, but it is looked upon advantageously. There are an increasing number of people who are undertaking or have undertaken postgraduate qualifications.

Would you recommend postgraduate studies to someone in a similar position to you, i.e. someone working in your field, or wishing to enter your field?
Yes, postgraduate studies provide a solid foundation of practical knowledge which is very relevant in my field. With the fast pace of advances in technology, they provide the necessary training and networking which enables you to keep up to date.

What did you hope to gain by doing postgraduate study?
Through postgraduate study, I wanted to have an increased understanding of my chosen field plus be able to do research projects.

How did your postgraduate qualifications assist you in getting a job?
The postgraduate course I did has a very good reputation in industry and it is highly commended. A few of my current co-workers went through the same postgraduate qualifications and so they knew the level of knowledge that I had gained and the experiences.
