Careers for humanities and social sciences VET graduates
VET graduates in this field have many career opportunities in a range of occupational areas such as library information, human services, counselling, aged care work, children’s services and disability work.
Courses at diploma and advanced diploma level will equip graduates to qualify in these various occupations, and to work in relevant community and educational organisations.
Courses and specialisations
This is a field with a great many different course options. Courses are available from certificate I to advanced diploma in areas ranging from ministry and theology, children’s services to library and information services.
Getting in
Many courses in this field will have virtually no entry requirements. However, others, particularly the diploma and advanced diploma programs will have entry requirements. Special checks and applications to work with the elderly, children or the disabled may be required for the practical elements of the courses.
Where to study
These courses are widely available at TAFE institutes and registered training organisations around the country.
Pathways
In some instances courses in this field may provide articulation pathways to higher levels of study both within the VET sector and the university sector. Credit and recognition of prior learning may be given for some of the lower level VET courses (such as certificate II, III or IV) towards diploma courses in the same or related subject areas.
Similarly, students who complete diploma or advanced diploma courses may be eligible for entry into degree courses in humanities and social sciences. In such instances, recognition of prior learning may result in exemption from one to two years of the bachelor course.
Case study
Graduates of the Diploma of Arts at the Sydney Institute of Business and Technology (SIBT) are eligible to gain entry to the Bachelor of Arts at Macquarie University. In addition, through recognition of prior learning, students may be eligible to apply for an exemption of one year from the three-year degree. The Diploma of Arts is based on units chosen from the Bachelor of Arts degree program at Macquarie University so it provides advanced standing and an alternative pathway to the second year of a Macquarie University degree course.
